Water Ingress – How It May Be Beneficial For Your Building Structure

Water ingress information refers to the leakage of water through an underground aquifer, or water system that provides freshwater in a particular region or around a particular property. Water that moves through a groundwater system will generally move at a slower rate than water moving through other means such as rivers or streams. This means that water moving through a groundwater system contains a higher concentration of salt and minerals than other types of water. It is not uncommon for areas to suffer from an excess of salt accumulation in water that travels through underground aquifers. When water reaches a property from an underground aquifer, the presence of these minerals can cause a variety of water-related problems, such as deterioration of soil, damage to foundation walls and floors, softening and cracking of concrete and wood, and so on.

The Benefits of Liquid Waterproofer

There are several possible causes of water ingress, with some relating to natural conditions (such as rainfall, melting ice, and snow), others relating to activities that take place nearby (such as heavy industry, construction and mining, and so on). It is very important to address any water ingress issues that may be causing cracks to appear in your walls or surrounding buildings. Water that seeps through damaged mortar can lead to expansion of the bricks of the building, weakening them and making them more susceptible to cracking. Furthermore, water that seeps in through porous structures such as brickwork can allow water to escape and spread, seeping in around the edges and damaging the surface below. The effects of water ingress on structures are particularly problematic in older properties, which are highly susceptible to cracking.

To address water ingress, one of the most effective solutions is to seal off an area around the building structure and fix any cracked or porous surfaces. Sealing the area will prevent moisture from penetrating the structure, dampening the impacts of water. Fixing affected areas by applying a waterproof coating will help to prevent water ingress by stopping moisture from the outside getting inside. This waterproofing method will also protect the structure from mould growth.
